CBT
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is proven to be highly effective in the treatment of low mood and depression, general anxiety, health anxiety, social anxiety, OCD and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It helps us understand what made you vulnerable and develop your current difficulties. We break down what happens in the moment by looking at your thoughts, mood, what happens in your body and what happens when all of these components combine together in any situation. In simplistic terms:
- Thoughts: There’s a big scary dog, he’s going to bite me
- Mood: anxious
- Physical: heart races, sweaty, tense, nausea
- Behaviour: Run away or avoid.
It’s common to fall into these unhelpful patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving, which eventually lead to further difficulties. Within the CBT approach, we develop coping strategies to deal with the beliefs and assumptions about ourselves, others, and the world around us that we pick up throughout our lives. We unpick these events and test out ideas to challenge our unhelpful thoughts and change our behaviour.
EMDR
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprogramming) is a highly effective treatment primarily used for the treatment of PTSD. It helps to process memories that have become ‘stuck’ and aims to reduce symptoms such as flashbacks, intrusive memories, nightmares and disruptions in mood that make you feel angry, anxious and under threat.
During the session we work together and look at a disturbing event, along with the emotions and body sensations that are associated with it, while using eye movements or pain-free, non-invasive tapping on each side of the body. This enables the brain and body to heal and file the disturbing event away so that you are able to view it from a new perspective without physical and psychological distress. EMDR helps you improve self-esteem and enhance your personal beliefs about your capabilities.
